J.J. Kavin Ross looks over new burial containers, each holding the remains of individuals exhumed during the 2021 field season, as they are prepared for reburial. At the time, Ross, a descendant of massacre survivors, was chair of the Tulsa Race Massacre Graves Investigation Public Oversight Committee. In 1997, Ross’ father, former state Rep. Don Ross, was the author and co-sponsor of House Joint Resolution 1035 which created the Oklahoma Commission to Study the Tulsa Race Riot of 1921. The results of that study served as the forerunner to the current investigation. Kavin Ross passed away on May 8, 2023. Photo courtesy of the City of Tulsa.
