WEST—A preservation milestone at the Conservancy’s Jokumsen Archaeological Preserve: the property’s historic barn has officially qualified for recognition as a Washington State Heritage Barn, placing it within a statewide program that highlights barns significant to Washington’s agricultural, economic, and cultural history. Created through legislation in 2007, Washington’s Heritage Barn Register (administered by the Department of Archaeology & Historic Preservation) was designed to better document and honor historic agricultural structures and to strengthen long-term stewardship. This designation is both an acknowledgment and a practical step forward; barns recognized through the Heritage Barn program can be eligible for state matching-grant support aimed at stabilization and rehabilitation, helping keep these landmarks standing for future generations.
