SOUTHWEST—The Southwest Regional Office has been working with Team Steel Rhinos #73175 of Frisco, Texas, which recently captured first place at their First Lego League (FLL) Challenge “Unearthed” season qualifier. The season spotlights how youth robotics and civic-minded innovation can support archaeological practice.
The team—Aahil Ali, Aaryan Sivaji, Bhargav Ram Reddy Singireddy, Vihaansai Reddy Muppidi, and captain Rithvik Sampath—is coached by Deepak Sampath with assistant coach Valliprasanthi Reddy. Composed of elementary and middle school students, Team Steel Rhinos developed a project that combines robot design and programming with an FLL Innovation Project aimed at bridging public engagement, preservation, and professional archaeology.
For the “Unearthed” challenge, the team developed an app that connects the public with guided archaeology events led by experts. In consultation with Western Regional Director April Brown and other archaeologists, the app enables sign-ups for expert-led site tours, access to preparatory training videos, and donations targeted to specific conservation projects. Future additions will include postings for internships and volunteer positions to aid career exploration and guidance on the principles of site stewardship and respectful visitation.
Team Steel Rhinos advanced from the FLL North Regional Tournament to the Texas State Championship, where they’ll have a chance to qualify for international competition. TAC staff wish them the best of luck!
